The question still remains which no one seems willing to ask, let alone answer - Why was it so important that Miranda Goeltom be elected to this position?

Four former Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmakers were each sentenced to 17 months in jail on Wednesday for their involvement in the corruption scandal involving Miranda Goeltom's appointment as Bank Indonesia deputy governor in 2004.

Ni Luh Mariani Tirtasari, Soewarno, Matheos Pormes and Soetanto Pranoto were proven guilty of taking hundreds of millions of rupiah in traveler’s checks in exchange for voting for Miranda.

“The defendants had received the money from Dudhie Makmoun Murod right after the voting without asking about the origins and the purpose [of the checks]," judge Marsudin Nainggolan said.

Dudhie, the faction treasurer who distributed the checks, was already given a two-year prison sentence.

On Friday, 10 former Golkar lawmakers also received jail time. Each was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Soewarno's legal representative, Sophar Maru Hutagalung, protested the sentence as it was higher than those of the Golkar lawmakers.

"What was the reasoning that the panel use to set the sentence? What parameter? It is very disturbing to us. They all received [money] but were sentenced differently," Sophar said.

The verdict hearing for PDI-P lawmaker Panda Nababan will be held at 1 p.m.
