Police investigating the Constitutional Court letter forgery case are close to naming another court clerk a suspect, a police source told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday.
The source, who requested anonymity, said that Pan Muhammad Faiz is a person of interest to the National Police General Crimes directorate, which is investigating the forgery.
“We suspect that he, together with our previous suspect, Zaenal Arifin Husein, drafted the forged letter,” the source said. He added that they were waiting for Husein’s case to be transferred to prosecutors before charging Faiz. “It is just a matter of time.”
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Untung Ketut Yoga would not confirm the source’s remarks, stating only that Faiz remains a witness.
“I will inform you later if he becomes a suspect,” he said.
Faiz, a prominent blogger on legal issues, and officials at the Constitutional Court declined to comment on the report.
The case centers on Andi Nurpati, a spokeswomen for the Democratic Party who allegedly used a forged Constitutional Court ruling in order to award a seat in the House of Representatives following the April 2009 elections.
Andi, who was an official with the General Elections Commission (KPU) at the time, has denied any wrongdoing.
Andi has not been named a suspect. Nearly all those charged, however, came from the court, the body that first reported the case to police.
A police source previously said Andi might face charges of violating the Criminal Code clauses relating to the use of a forged document . The charge carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
But police had been instructed to re-evaluate all the evidence again before naming Andi as a suspect, the police source said.
In August 2009, Mashuri Hasan, who is in police custody, alledgedly printed, registered and forged the letter that handed victory in the election battle to Dewie Yasin Limpo.
Mashuri, who came under suspicion after the scandal emerged, claims he forged the letter at the behest of Dewie, Andi and Arsyad Sanusi, a former court judge.
Andi brought the forged letter to a KPU meeting on the contested election, where Dewie was granted the House seat, despite complaints from the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu).
The decision was reversed in September 2009 after the Constitutional Court contacted the police. The court then awarded the seat to Mestariyani Habie, the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) candidate.
