Three alleged members of a terror group led by Noordin Mohammad Top went on trial on Thursday over the double suicide hotel bombings in Jakarta last year.

Bayu Seno, alias Tono, faces multiple charges under the Anti-Terror Law for allegedly helping prepare the bombs and participating in a terrorist training camp in Aceh that was raided by police in February.

“He assisted in an act of terrorism by way of purposely using violence and stirring up an atmosphere of terror and widespread fear,” prosecutor Kiki Ahmad Yani told the West Jakarta District Court.

Bayu Seno, 26, appeared in court in April as a witness in the trial of Amir Abdillah, a trusted aide of Noordin, at the South Jakarta District Court.

Aside from being trained as a suicide bomber, Bayu told the court in April he had played a key role in the July 17 hotel bombings, having met Noordin in 2008.

Prosecutors said on Thursday that Bayu and the two other men had prepared five bombs and packed them into two laptop computers, two backpacks and one travel bag.

The explosive material had been bought in Solo, Central Java, and the bombs were kept in a house in Sukabumi, West Java, before being brought to Jakarta and detonated at the JW Marriot and Ritz-Carlton hotels, killing seven people.

Bayu also had helped prepare a car bomb that was to be used to assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The plan was foiled when police raided their other hiding house at Bekasi, prosecutors said.

Bayu escaped to Aceh with the help of a man known as Ustadz Jaffar, but was captured during a series of raids in February that resulted in the arrests of at least 50 suspected militants and the deaths of eight others.

In a separate hearing, alleged Islamic militant Pandu Wicaksono went on trial charged with hiding Noordin at his house in Surakarta, Central Java, in June last year.

Another suspect, Suramto, is accused of recruiting one of the suicide bombers and buying explosive material used for the hotel attacks.

All face the death penalty if found guilty.

Noordin was killed in a police raid in September last year, ending one of Southeast Asia’s biggest manhunts.
