Bogor. Rescue workers found three bodies early on Thursday after a rain-triggered landslide buried three houses in Sindangsari village, Central Bogor.

Floods also inundated parts of Cawang and Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta, with the water reaching nearly waist-high in Cawang.

The three landslide victims were Mumuh, 57, his daughter Anisa Fatmawati, 3, and their neighbor, Nano Suratno, 53. Mumuh’s wife, Endang Purwati, managed to escape.

“The family was watching TV at home when it hit,” Central Bogor Police chief Comr. Kristian Budhiono Kristian said.

“They heard the thunder and rain and when the earth shook Endang ran outside to call for help. Within seconds her home, as well as the homes of Nano and another neighbor, Syamsurizal Effendi, were buried.

“The evacuation was conducted with shovels so as not to damage the bodies. After four hours of digging, officers found the bodies of Mumuh and Anisa. The search then stopped because officers feared another landslide. We resumed at 6 a.m. and an hour later we found Nano’s body.”

Neighborhood head Djunaedi said he had heard thunder and rushed outside and found Mumuh’s house buried.

“Then the land collapsed again and two more houses were buried,” he said.

Kristian said the area was prone to slides because it was hilly. “We have warned people over and over again about landslides,” he said.

The police chief said Cipaku village in South Bogor and the Cipayungdatar village in Bogor had also been hit by landslides.

The Cipayungdatar landslide buried two homes. There were no fatalities but roads were blocked, causing hours-long traffic jams.

Indonesia has been experiencing extreme weather, with torrential rains continuing to pound the capital and other regions.

Meteorologists say a warming planet and the La Nina climate cycle are to blame.

Residents of Bintaro, South Jakarta, on Thursday demanded the local administration take urgent action to shore up the embankment of the Pesanggrahan River.

They said Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo’s order for more sand bags to be brought in as a temporary solution to prevent flooding was not enough.

Hundreds of homes in the area were inundated during torrential rains on Aug. 17.

Resident Mansyur Arif, 54, said that two years ago more than 250 households had collected money to “patch up the embankment.”

“All residents donated as much as they could and we bought sand, rocks and cement to patch the crack in the embankment,” he said standing outside his home. “So they were very upset when [the banks] collapsed.

“If within a month there is no significant action from the administration, other than stacking up sacks of sand, we might start our own prevention methods again,” Mansyur said.

Dedeh, 47, said she was now fearful every time there was a downpour in her area.

“I am so worried that there will be a sudden flood like last week. I can never cook my food in peace,” she said.

Darsikin, 54, said he was tired of waiting for the government to act on its promise.

“If they still want to have the people’s hearts, they better do what they promised,” he said.

Darsikin lives near where the embankment collapsed, and the rushing waters tore down the back door of his house.

He said he realized land acquisition and repair work took time, but wanted more action to be taken.

“But I expect the government to at least build the wall again so that the people can be sure that they are safe when the rains come,” Darsikin said.
