Prosecutors on Thursday presented in court eight more suspects — including two police officers — arrested in relation to the group behind the paramilitary training camp in Aceh that was allegedly preparing attacks on the president, state officials and government offices.

The eight bring to 29 the total number of those indicted in the case since last week in what has been dubbed the country’s biggest terror trial. At least 30 more suspects are in detention awaiting court.

In the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday, police officers Tatang Mulyadi and Abdi Tunggal were charged with selling 28 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition to suspected terrorists.

The two men worked as logistics officers charged with guarding a National Police warehouse where weapons were stored, prosecutors said. If convicted, they face life in prison.

Also indicted on Thursday was Ahmad Sutrisno, a businessman accused of acting as a broker between the two officers and terror suspect Sofyan Tsauri, a former police officer linked to the training camp.

Meanwhile, defendants Bhakti Rasna, Agam Fitriady, Yudi Zulfahri, Ismarwan and Hari Budiman appeared in the West Jakarta District Court. They face charges including providing supplies for the camp, smuggling weapons, recruiting members from outside Aceh and assisting chief militant Dulmatin, who was killed by police in March.

Yudi met with key suspected militants Dulmatin, Ubaid and Abu Tholut in January 2009 and took them on a scouting tour of Aceh’s Jantho district, prosecutor Bambang Suharyadi said.

Identifying themselves as Tanzim Al Qaeda Serambi Mekkah, the Aceh branch of Al Qaeda in Southeast Asia, the group opened the camp in late January this year with Dulmatin serving as the commander, according to the indictment.

At another hearing on Thursday, Bhakti, alias Abu Haikal, was accused of being Dulmatin’s bodyguard. The two met in Depok sometime in 2008 and became constant companions, prosecutors said.

“[Bhakti] knew about the act of terrorism but failed to report to authorities,” prosecutor Chairul Fauzi said.
