"Every four hours you hear the call to prayer. The streets are crazy, always full of traffic with no let up: you get trapped. It's a big change but I'm being treated really well." - Guti. He is a former Real Madrid football player who recently moved to Istanbul, Turkey, a country with a relatively strong Muslim culture. Judging by his description of Istanbul, it looks like the city is not that different to Jakarta (apart from the European vibe). I wonder if he is actually stupid enough to accuse a group of Muslims there and indirectly insult/question their beliefs. I can't be bothered to read the comments from this article or the other articles that has a similar topic but in a nutshell: If you don't like it, then leave. Simple right? Both parties would be happy and we could all continue with our lives.

@justdoddy, its always hilarious that a Muslim's idea of tolerance is that people respect his religion.

Just in case you've been asleep under a stone for 200 years or so, Western nations show a damn sight more respect to Islam than Islam ever does to others, and we still feel guilty that we haven't shown enough respect.

Contrast that with Islam:

it demands respect (sorry, respect is earned by deeds not words)

Certain Islamic states only recognise religions of their choosing

Some Islamic states will deport foreigners for bringing in non-Islamic items like crosses, bibles

Islam has no respect for Muslims hence practically every Muslim state is a danger to its citizens

And the list goes on.

If these potential Koran-burners in America were to suggest that they will burn a Koran a day until they hear church-bells ringing in Saudi Arabia, then they might get more support.

Btw, the Germans is also a Muslim therefore why wasn't he praying with the villagers?? He was accepted as their own in the village. He could have asked them the nature of his headless statues after the prayers...without provoking a situation. Diplomacy, diplomacy!!! End of story.

Non White minorities who would have offended a cultural or religious situation in a majority White society would suffer a similar fate. Same difference. C'est la vie.

Aww...Give it a rest...it will all cool down and the story will be of the past. The German and the villagers are all the same...emotions run high in their blood. It is easy to point the finger toward a minority in a majority Indonesian/Muslim country. The same way of thinking applies in the Western World. What goes around comes around. It is all too familiar...read the news.

On another note, a similar fate would also bestowed upon a foreigner for insulting the Buddhist religion, images and temples in Thailand. And not to forget the "Lese Majeste" ...a more serious offense for insulting something closely related to the revered king of Thailand. It has happened and a foreigner may languish in a prison...SOL.

justdoddy - No! What you call tolerance is that everybody respects Indonesian Muslim beliefs and practices, whilst you have absolutely no respect or tolerance for anybody else.

You are obviously living in a bubble, fingers in ears and blindfolded. Have you not noticed in these pages stories of Muslim persecution of the 'other' religions in Indonesia, the banning of building and forced closure of churches, and the prevention of religious services? Get real mate.

Lombok. A second foreigner residing on Lombok Island in Indonesia has found himself the object of local wrath for allegedly defiling Islam during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Locals from Sidemen village on Lombok’s main tourism area of Senggigi told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday that hundreds of residents had attacked and wrecked a villa belonging to a German national and torched his motorcycle for blaspheming Islam.

Police identified the man as Stephen Alexander, 35, also known as Abu-Can Peter.

Mustan, a local, said Alexander discovered that a vandal had decapitated one of the statues in front of his villa on Monday evening and took the severed head to the home of village chief Amalsah.

“He came carrying the statue head and got angry at the village chief, accusing the villagers of damaging his statues.”

Alexander threatened to report the vandalism to the police if Amalsah could not find the vandal within two weeks, Mustan said.

He said villagers had just finished tarawih (evening prayers during Ramadan) and were insulted when Alexander demanded to know, “What kind of Muslims we were?”

“His words were deeply hurtful.”

As Alexander fled for the forest, the enraged villagers trashed the resident’s villa and burned his motorcycle.

Alexander, who has lived in the Lombok for ten years and is married to an Indonesian, only emerged from the forest when police arrived. They promptly arrested the expatriate and are holding him in protective custody at Senggigi Police headquarters.

Luke Gregory Lloyd, 64, meanwhile, is facing the prospect of six years in jail after he was charged with blaspheming Islam and immigration violations after disrupting a late-night Koran recital in a mosque near his house in Kuta, Lombok, on Aug. 22.

Police allege the American expatriate barged into the prayer session with his shoes on, unplugged a microphone and may have even assaulted one of the worshippers.

Lloyd, whose home was also trashed, denies the charges.
