Kuala Lumpur. A Malaysian court sentenced an Indonesian woman to 15 years in jail for killing her employer after being verbally and physically abused, a news report said Thursday.
Indah Wijayanti, 23, slit 41-year-old Kek Huey Lian’s throat with a knife in July 2007. She had worked for her for more than a year, the New Straits Times said.
Wijayanti had been using the knife to clean a fish when Kek allegedly scolded her and threw a paper plate at the maid. She fled to a neighbor's house after killing her employer, the court was told.
Wijayanti’s lawyer said the young woman had been verbally and physically abused while working for Kek, adding that she had “snapped” during the incident.
The judge ordered Wijayanti, who pleaded guilty to culpable homicide resulting in death, to serve the 15-year sentence from the date of her arrest in July 2007.
Malaysia is home to more than 320,000 foreign maids, some 85 percent of them from Indonesia.
