Yogyakarta. This week’s royal wedding of the youngest daughter of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X will be shown on six giant screens to be set up across the city, an official said on Monday.
Municipal spokesperson Kus Kasriyati said one screen would be installed at Fort Vredeburg at the south end of Jalan Malioboro, one at its main parking lot, two in the South Square just south of the palace and another two in the northern square.
Kus said that on Monday the bride and groom underwent the siraman , or shower, ceremony, in which close relatives and elders shower the couple with flower-scented water to symbolically cleanse their body and soul.
“The siraman process is a moment to clean the heart, body, and mind for both the bride and the groom,” said Yudha Hadiningrat, who heads the family’s organizing committee. “Now, the sultan will ask a final question to his daughter, whether she is ready to get married. If she answers no, the wedding will be canceled, but if yes, the wedding will go on.”
In the evening, the bride will undergo the midodareni procession, where she will have to stay awake until late.
“The purpose of the midodareni is to wait for angels to come down to this world to make up the bride so she will look pretty on her wedding day,” Yudha said.
The grand royal wedding will take place today, and the reception will be held in the Kepatihan hall in the evening. The royal couple will leave the palace’s northern gate in a procession of royal horse-drawn carriages, escorted by royal guards as well as the cavalry.
The procession will pass through Jalan Malioboro on their way to the Kepatihan, the site of the governor’s complex, where the reception will be held.
At the Kepatihan, the couple will be welcomed by traditional palace dancers who will perform a pair of special routines, the Bedoyo Manten and the Bedoyo Lawung Ageng.
“Both are sacred dances,” Yudha said. “The Bedoyo Temanten was created by Hamengkubuwono IX in 1942.”
That dance, which involves six young female dancers, tells the story of two people who are in love and go on to get married, Yudha added. It lasts for about one hour.
The Bedhaya Lawung Ageng is performed by 12 men. It portrays valor and courage, but symbolically it is believed to be related to fertility.
Yudha said that all dancers must undergo fasting and meditation before they can perform the sacred dances.
The groom, Achmad Ubaidillah, was given the honorary name and title Kanjeng Yudhanegara.
