Two of the 170 Indonesians working as ship’s crew on the Costa Concordia cruise ship have undergone treatment in hospital for injuries sustained when the ship ran aground on Friday.

The Indonesian Embassy in Rome reported that it had identified 170 Indonesian citizens who were staffing the ship when it hit a reef off the Italian coast, ripping a 50-meter hole in the hull and flipping the vessel onto its side.

Embassy spokesman Priyo Iswanto said the two, whose names he gave as Kadek Agus Wijaya and I Nyoman Juniarta, had been treated in two separate hospitals for serious injuries including broken bones.

“Kadek has been pronounced well again, but is waiting on paperwork from the hospital before he can check out,” said Priyo on Monday.

He added that the remaining 168 Indonesians, including six women, who were working on the boat before the disaster had been collected together and were staying in three hotels in the city of Grosetto, 200 kilometers from Rome.

Priyo said that after learning of Friday night’s accident, the embassy had sent staff on Saturday to determine the condition of the Indonesian crew, and a day later had sent assistance in the form of fresh clothes and food, along with providing other consular assistance.

It has been reported that the cruise ship had been deliberately steered close to Giglio Island off the Italian coast, to provide an opportunity for islanders and passengers to exchange waving greetings, when it hit “Le Scole,” a patch of submerged rocks well known to islanders.

The bodies of six passengers have been recovered from the ship, while another 16 were still unaccounted for on Monday.

Police are investigating allegations that the ship’s captain abandoned the vessel well before all his passengers had been safely helped off.
