The Indonesian ambassador to Switzerland was not impressed with the announcement of the preliminary results showing Komodo National Park as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature he said on Saturday.
“We monitored the N7W’s office all day but there were no activities there. In Zurich, it [the announcement] is unheard of,” Ambassador Djoko Susilo told news portal Detik.com on Saturday.
Djoko claimed that the New7Wonders’ president, Bernard Weber, came to the N7W’s office yesterday but left when he saw an Indonesian journalist.
The ambassador suggested that the money spent to promote Komodo National Park as one of the new seven wonders should have been spent elsewhere.
“We spent money for this contest, while we could have used the money for komodo conservation,” he said. “Their [New7Wonders] motivation is obviously money.”
Komodo National Park was listed along with the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, the Puerto Princessa Underground River and Table Mountain as a provisional winner.
The list was posted at around 2 a.m. Jakarta time, about six hours after the close of voting on Friday.
“It is possible that there will be changes between the above provisional winners and the eventual finally confirmed winners,” the statement on the organization’s Web site said.
Even in the final hours of voting on Friday, controversy continued to cloud the Komodo National Park’s bid to become one of the world’s New Seven Wonders of Nature.
The Committee for the Rule of Law (KSHI), a group of 40 lawyers, has filed a class action lawsuit demanding that the New7Wonders Foundation and the NGO Supporters for a Komodo Victory (P2Komodo), return any profits from their publicity endeavors to pay for the conservation of the Komodo Islands.
“The return of all proceeds is one point in the class action that we filed on Thursday,” KSHI chief Achmad Salim said in Jakarta on Friday.
He said the increased popularity of the Komodo Islands posed a threat to the delicate ecosystem.
Achmad said the KSHI filed the lawsuit following several complaints that text message charges were frequently changed.
“We want all proceeds from the text message fees to be used to support conservation efforts,” he said.
