Loudspeakers are originally used for the purpose of distance calling, e.g. their use in less populated regions where citizens reside far apart and beyond (from each other)for example related in this case, the desert area with sparse populations.

It is a matter of fact that excessive loud decibel/sound pressure could damage the hearing. Not to mention health in general if it causes normal sleep deprivation. During the day time one/orang can get sluggish and sleepy, for a start, when orang has to concentrate to study/work/field work/drive/giving speeches (and minimise accidents or slurs/mistakes being made)

Tranquility (& Harmony): are there no such concepts in Indonesia?

@Xildur...There are also Muslims who think that blaring a sermon on a loudspeaker in the middle of the night is disturbing the peace and unethical. What can they really do??

And where did you get such a laughable absurd idea that the majority of Indonesian Muslims would spell a death threat on those who insult their religion? The small percentage of Radicals perhaps?

How about in Thailand where cases of foreigners who have defied the Buddhist religion and disrespect the revered King for "Lese Majeste" are put in jail...

I don't even live in this country but I do know to respect the culture of the land should I have a chance to visit it again. Why complicate things and why rant about it as if there is such a deep frustration to be living in Indonesia...Then by all means leave no one is asking you to stay....

It is also easy to bash those who are most vulnerable and perhaps uneducated...Don't always judge a book by its cover pal!!! Get your facts straight.

I understand that the original mosque speaker was Bilal. He was a loud speaker but limited to one voice power. Why not honor the tradition by cutting down the volume?

Do you know what happen if we, Indonesian non-muslim protest the noise?

Death is will be easy because majority of Indonesian moslem don't have anything to lose then easy to kill when something is perceived to insult them (and their religion).

Thanks for the replies. Gets a bit feisty on JG.. Perhaps I should find someone to analyse my deep seated deficiencies, (content wise it could fill a Britannica no doubt about it) on the Oprah Winfrey site after I've finished with this.

Lets face it, we all love a good bashing. Bring it on, hack at them care free Aussies, arrogant Yanks, and the 'way' too happy Canadians, especially the Canadians, we all deserve a good whacking at some point, it's whether or not you can take it on the chin that counts. Although I must admit the US are a bit over sensitive at times, they don't take well to being called stupid or even idiot would you believe? Take things a little too serious if you know what I mean.

Anyway everyone here has a point, good ones at that, I think I even had one or two in there somewhere.. oh oh, my self esteem issues are rearing up again ;)

BTW as for the escort business, I've known quiet a few in my time, well maybe just two actually, who have literally been kicked out of the country by military personnel for saying something as inane as suggesting that T Suharto's old girlfriend was a terrible singer... etc

As for me feeling duped, na, Indo rocks. I feel pretty secure knowing that if it were otherwise, i'd head on out to mock another part of the world and to find new adventures. How bout you ?

Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. Luke Gregory Lloyd, an American being held on suspicion of blasphemy and immigration violations after disrupting a late-night Koran recital near his house, denied all the allegations against him on Tuesday.

Speaking at the hotel where he is being detained by Central Lombok Police, Lloyd, who goes by the name Amaq Greg, said the police’s version of what happened on the night of Aug. 22 was incorrect.

Amaq is an honorary title given to elderly men on the island of Lombok.

According to the 64-year-old, he was constantly disturbed by the loudspeaker at a musholla (prayer facility) near his home in Kuta village.

On the night of Aug. 22, Lloyd said he went to the musholla to ask them to turn down the loudspeaker, which villagers were using to broadcast their Koran recital.

Police said Lloyd stormed into the musholla and berated worshippers. Lloyd, however, said he politely asked the villagers to turn down on the loudspeaker because the noise was not only disturbing him but also his expatriate neighbors.

Police said the American entered the musholla without taking off his shoes and then unplugged the microphone being used to recite the Koran.

Lloyd said he only got as far as the musholla’s courtyard, where he was pushed. He said he became angry and pushed back, at which point he was targeted by stones.

“It is not true that I unplugged the loudspeaker’s cable,” Lloyd said. “It is not true that I stomped on a Koran. It is not true that I hit a minor at the mosque. None of the allegations are true. I only asked them to turn the speaker down.”

He also said his house was trashed after the incident, with damages estimated at Rp 200 million ($22,000).

Lloyd expressed shock that he had been attacked and his house damaged, saying that he had frequently helped residents since moving to the village more than 10 years ago.

The American, who claimed to be a former mayor of a Californian city, said he taught English in the village and financially assisted three children there.

When asked about allegations that he had violated the immigration law, Lloyd said his visa was valid until April 1 next year.

Lloyd, who refused to have his picture taken, said he hoped to be able to stay in Indonesia and return to Kuta village. He said he had contacted the US Embassy in Jakarta but had not yet received a response.

He is staying at a hotel in Praya, Central Lombok, and appears to be guarded loosely by police. Lloyd said he was allowed to leave the hotel on his own to do his daily shopping.

Earlier, police confirmed that Lloyd had been charged with blasphemy and was also suspected of immigration violations.

Police said they were requesting the help of an expert from the Ministry of Religious Affairs in their investigation into the blasphemy charge.
