Renowned spiritual guru Anand Krishna failed to appear at Jakarta Police headquarters on Tuesday for questioning about allegations that he committed an obscene act with a teenage student.
“Pak Anand cannot attend the investigation today because he is ill,” Anand’s lawyer, Astro Girsang, said at Jakarta Police headquarters on Tuesday.
“I don’t have the authority to say what his illness is,” he added. “Pak Anand only needs a week to rest. We’re only here to hand-deliver the doctor’s note.”
Astro said Anand, who has been declared a suspect in the case, had been suffering from the unspecified health issue for “some time” and it was unrelated to his status as a criminal suspect.
The lawyer said Anand was prepared to face the charges. “He’s ready for his new status as a suspect. How could he not be? He feels none of the accusations are true. It’s fabricated,” Astro said.
Four women have accused Anand of forcing them to perform sexual acts, although police have named him as a suspect in relation to the allegations of just one of the women.
Anand was accused of violating an article of the Criminal Code stipulating that “anyone found guilty of committing an obscene act with someone that [the perpetrator] knows is unconscious or helpless” can be jailed for a maximum of seven years.
Comr. Murnila, head of the Jakarta Police’s Women and Children Center, said that if Anand refused to answer a second summons, he could be taken into custody by force.
