Jakarta. Peterpan frontman Nazril “Ariel” Irham will be staying put in jail on pornography charges following a police announcement Tuesday that his plea for conditional release had been rejected.
Ariel’s lawyer, Otto Cornelius Kaligis, had filed the plea to have his client confined within the city limits pending the outcome of police investigations.
“We can’t grant the request,” National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said in Denpasar, Bali. “His detention is commensurate with the severity of his [alleged] crime.”
Ariel is in custody on pornography charges after three video clips surfaced on the Internet showing him having sex with two women, TV presenters and models Luna Maya and Cut Tari.
Ariel was arrested in June.
While Luna and Cut Tari face the same charges, police say they have no plans to detain them because they are being “cooperative.” But the two women have been banned from leaving the country.
Ariel was initially suspected of uploading the videos to the Internet until police arrested Reza Rezaldi, Peterpan’s music editor.
Reza is alleged to have unlawfully copied the videos from Ariel’s laptop and uploaded them.
Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Marwoto Soeto said his office also plans to charge three university students, believed to be linked to Reza, over the videos.
He said police were waiting for warrants from the Bandung District Court in West Java before they could charge the students.
Meanwhile, Marwoto denied rumors that Ariel and Luna Maya have gotten married in a jailhouse ceremony.
“If they wanted to get married in detention they would have to ask permission from the chief detective. And we have not received any such request,” he said.
