Indonesian police say a 14-year-old Australian boy in custody for alleged marijuana possession will likely avoid a prison sentence.

The boy, who cannot be identified under Indonesian law, has been held in a police cell since Oct. 4 when he allegedly bought 7 grams of marijuana on the tourist island of Bali. He faces up to six years’ imprisonment.

But Bali drug squad chief Col. Mulyadi said on Monday the suspect will likely be charged under a section of the narcotic law that does not carry a prison sentence “since he is still a boy and user.”

The section allows drug users caught with small quantities of marijuana to be released by a judge for rehabilitation without serving a prison sentence.
