Bogor. Six female grey kangaroos arrived in Jakarta on Saturday evening after an 18-hour flight from Perth, Australia.

The Indonesian Safari Park (TSI) in Cisarua, Bogor, received the animals from the Australian Zoo.

The marsupials were accompanied by three Australian Zoo staff members — Tim Potas, Lauire Pond and Kelsey — and were greeted by Cisarua TSI director Tony Sumampau upon their arrival in Jakarta.

The animals are expected to spend a week in quarantine so they can adapt and recover from the trip to before being introduced to the stresses of public exposure, Sumampau said.

TSI received the kangaroos through a “sister park” cooperation agreement with the Australian Zoo that was forged several years ago when the facility had been headed by Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin and his wife Terri Raines.

Irwin, the naturalist and television star, died in a diving accident in far north Queensland in September 2006. Police said he was stabbed through the heart by a stingray while diving off of Port Douglas.

“So, it was the Australian Zoo which recommended that Indonesia should get kangaroos,” Sumampau said.

The six kangaroos are part of a total of 15 kangaroos slated to be given to Indonesia.
