I agree BUT once again its duplicity. Have you heard for instance about the nightclub owner who was found to have held hostage a drug runner? He had a crystal meths factory in his basement - shot at a bus.... Where is he now? In jail? In custody? Nope... At home

What about the 2 politicians in Surabya? still home, Surharto's grand daughter? Still home AND being portrayed as a victim !!

32,000 drug arrests last year of which 151 were non indonesians - Of the 151 - near 60% recieved the death penalty - of the 31,849 Indonesians - 17 reople recieved the death penalty and less that 2% had custodial sentences.... hmmm

The deterent needs to be as much aty the user as the supplier PLUS the suppliers who are not importing need to be dealt with in the same manner.. They simply are not and since most of the drugs are internally grown/manufactured/distributed the blame game against forigners is unfounded. MOST non Indonesians caught are caught as users not distributors but still recieve extraordinary penalties whilst the Indonesian supply chain remains largely unchecked

On from that...Let us wonder if the 12 year old boy is still in jail for a $1.11 phone card theft (one he picked up from the floor after hiding from a riot - no rioters arrested BTW)... Recall also that the AGO recently said it would not persue corruption charges unless the loss was over $28,000... But a boy gets 3 months for a phone card ....

The constintuional court rules home porn is not illegal. Is Ariel out yet? no Is Arifindo still at the DPR ? Yes

DUPLICITY

rant over

I’m glad that he didn’t face the death penalty.. and who knows? Maybe his sentence may be reduced to just 10 years or so. If he was merely a delivery man then I don’t see the need to execute him. I think Indonesia was trying to demonstrate how serious they were in dealing with drug smugglers and I think they have succeeded.

Australian drug smuggler Scott Rush, one of a gang known as the Bali Nine, has won an appeal against his death sentence in Indonesia, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

“His judicial review has been accepted by the Supreme Court. His death penalty has been annulled and the sentence has been changed to life,” Frans Hendra Winata said.

“The reason is because he is still young, he expressed remorse and he has never been convicted of any other crime. And most especially, he was just a courier and not the mastermind.”

The 24-year-old was convicted and ultimately sentenced to death for his role in an attempt to smuggle some eight kilograms of heroin into Australia from the Indonesian resort island of Bali in 2005.

The two alleged ringleaders of the Bali Nine gang, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, are also seeking to have their death sentences reduced to life.

A spokesman for the Indonesian Supreme Court was unable to confirm that Rush’s appeal had been successful.

“I don’t know yet about that,” spokesman Djoko Sarwoko said.
