Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar resumed operation on Wednesday after a 24 hour hiatus to respect the Hindu holiday of Nyepi.

"As of 6 am all activities have returned to normal. 220 flights have resumed operation. There were minor delays to the first flights because everybody was allowed to go out only after 5 am,” said airport spokesman Dimyati.

The Nyepi holiday requires the island to go silent for one day each year. Tourists are kept inside hotels with blackout shades and residents stay home.

"There were no emergency landing requests" over the holiday, Dimyati added.

"We have always been ready for emergency landings because 250 airport staffers and officials stand by during Nyepi,” she said .

Bali's ports have also reopened.

“Sea transportation began at 6 am. The first ferry to arrive was from Ketapang Harbor in Banyuwangi,” said water transport operational manager Ospar Silaban at the Gilimanuk port in Jembrana.
