It is nice to read the comments about the good being done by caring people.

I guess the problem is that there are so many really horrible people doing really terrible things in Indonesia, that they kind of swamp the good guys.

Predominantly religious conservative and radical groups in Indonesia could have been named heroes and contribute for a better future of this country. But instead they have given a deep sense of grievance, misguided meaning of their beliefs and shame in the name of a religion.

Blightyboy - I dont know about Jakarta but I have seen many great works done by different organisations here in and around Surabaya..

There is the cleft palate association (aka Tulip), Rotary Club, many orphanages and charities trying to make a difference.

I have had a long association with an orphanage in Malang where I sponsor some kids. They look after up to 1,000 kids inside and outside the orphanage. The people who work there are absolute saints - they take any child no matter what their disability. A tour of their on site hospital would break your heart, little kids with the most awfull impairements, many of whom will not survive. For those that visit, it brings most to tears.

The children live in small family size units, where they are taught to help and support each other, they all have tasks they need to comlete. Quite marvellous to behold.

Indonesian-based American midwife Robin Lim has been named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year. Lim, known to many as Ibu Robin, or Mother Robin, leads a non-profit, donation-based organization called Yayasan Bumi Sehat (Healthy Mother Earth Foundation) that focuses on prenatal care, maternal health and child survival in Bali.

“Every baby’s first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love,” Lim was quoted by CNN as saying during the cable news network’s All Star Tribute in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet,” Lim said.

The award honors ordinary people from around the world who are making extraordinary contributions in their communities.

Lim, speaking earlier to CNN, highlighted Indonesia’s high maternal and infant mortality rates that were caused by the high costs of maternal care.

“The situation is bad ... babies are unattended, deliveries have become commercialized, and mothers die from hemorrhage after childbirth because they can’t afford proper care,” Lim said.

The CNN Hero of the Year receives a total of $300,000 for her cause. The winner was chosen after an 11-week vote on CNN.com.
