Bali Prison Riot Started With Attack

Denpasar. Prisoners rioted at the Kerobokan State Penitentiary in Bali on Sunday, leading to damage at the jail and some inmates almost escaping, police said.

Three inmates were arrested after police officers were deployed to quell the riot, Badung Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr, Benny Arjanto said.

“We rescued the three from the mob and they are now detained at the Kuta Utara subdistrict police station,” Benny said.

All three, he said, were drug convicts. He identified them as Eko Mardianto, Dwi Wijayanto and Bashori.

He said the riot started at around 4 p.m. and was believed to have been triggered when one prisoner, Made Eriyasa, was stabbed by Eko and his friends. That caused other inmates to go after the perpetrators, setting off the riot.

Police intervention only stoked the flames. Angry prisoners tried to break through one of the gates.

“We are still detailing the damage and losses,” Kerobokan warden Bowo Nariwono said.

Although police managed to get the situation under control, about 150 personnel remain on guard there.

One inmate was rushed to Sanglah General Hospital with stab wounds.

The incident was the latest violent outburst at the jail. On Jan. 12, convict Edi Suwito, 28, was found dead in his cell one day after he was admitted. It turned out he had been tortured by 13 of his fellow inmates.

In June, a National Narcotics Agency (BNN) raid on the prison led to rioting, wounding some investigators and prison officials.

Bowo said the jail was 300 percent overcrowded and thus prone to violence.
