Denpasar. The Attorney General’s Office on Monday dismissed a prosecutor in Bali for falsifying a court ruling against a Philippine national convicted of drug possession in 2006.
The Denpasar prosecutor’s office intelligence chief Anak Agung Gede Satya Markandea said the prosecutor, Sunaryo, had been dishonorably discharged.
“The dismissal decision came straight from the AGO,” he said.
Satya said that although Sunaryo is no longer a prosecutor, the office will continue to employ him as a part-time worker in the same division as 19 drivers, janitors and office helpers.
In June 2006, Philippine national Steven Anthony Gamboa was arrested with three other foreigners for consuming drugs at their rented house in Kuta.
Police, who also arrested Gamboa’s landlady, Ida Bagus Mauamba, confiscated 28 ecstasy pills and 11.9 grams of heroin.
Later that year, the Denpasar District Court found Gamboa guilty and sentenced him to eight months in prison. But Satya said Sunaryo forged the court document containing the ruling and changed the verdict to four months in prison.
The fake letter was taken to the Kerobokan penitentiary where Gamboa was serving his sentence. He was released on Oct. 10, 2006, although the real ruling states that he was to be freed in February 2007.
After his release, Gamboa immediately returned to his country, and the forgery was unraveled after the Denpasar court ordered prosecutors to bring Gamboa to testify at the trial of his landlady.
Prosecutors were stunned to learn Gamboa had already been released and had left the country.
Satya said he didn’t know why it took so long to dismiss Sunaryo or whether Gamboa had bribed him to forge the court document.
“I don’t know, maybe other officials know about that,” he said.
