Dear Readers,

I was attending the event where Bapak Djajati talked to the reporters from Antara (actually they introduced themselves as working for Kompas).

What he told them is far from what is reported here.

He mentioned that the Tourist Police Officers could all speak English but that additional training from native speakers would enhance their efficiency in dealing with "tourists".

Instead of having the attitude of making the police force look as if they could not do their work, I think journalists (and the general public) should look at the efforts made by the public and private sector to improve the experience of persons visiting Bali.

That is the goal of this partnership.

Jet

At a typical razia in Bali there are 3 standard groups

1. All motorbikes (except HD of course) the police know that many locals dont have permits - they 'spot fine them or take payment in another fashion from the ladies at least'

2. Tourists on motorbikes - happily a lot of them have papers and mostly get away without a 'fine' unless they panic. If they do not have papers well its there fault and deserve a fine

3. Non Bali plate cars (irrespective of the driver) A lot of these are pulled and ragged for cash also

For spot stops - the driving non Indonesian and non Bali plate is tops

The Bali police are not racially motivated they are cash motivated - they care not if they take it from a ginger haired austrian or a black haired Indonesian - in fact my guess is they prefer the latter because they know how it goes

@benvanstaveren...You got that one right. However racial profiling may be taken into consideration. The police may know that tourists may not be holding the proper licenses to operate in Bali. There are places to get one locally legitimately and been advised about it.

Bali’s tourist police officers will take English-language immersion classes after their bosses admitted very few of them can communicate with the visitors they are charged with protecting.

“It’s true that only a handful of our staff can speak English, even though that would very much support their work in the field because they are always dealing with foreign tourists,” said Ida Bagus Djajati, head of Bali’s tourist police.

The police will receive free English lessons from the Bali Hotels Association and the London Academy, Ida said.
