Denpasar. A delegation of 27 dancers and musicians from a Bali university is scheduled to leave for Japan today to conduct a series of traditional performances.
The group, consisting of staff and students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar, will spend a week at Kanda University of International Studies, located on the outskirts of Tokyo.
ISI’s dean and head of the delegation, I Wayan Rai S, said in Denpasar on Tuesday that the trip was organized by the Ministry of National Education as an exchange visit to Kanda University, which had sent groups to ISI three times previously.
This would be the third overseas trip for ISI Denpasar this year, Wayan Rai said. As part of its previous tours, the institute also held performances at universities in Malaysia and Thailand to help strengthen its international cooperation program.
The Balinese delegates will perform some classical and new dances in Japan. Wayan Rai said the performances would include the tabuh gambang suling , topeng tua , oleg tambulilingan , legong kuntul , gebyar ding sempati , jauk manis and telek dances. In addition to performing at Kanda University, the group will also visit nearby schools.
Wayan Rai said that he hoped the collaboration between the Japanese and Balinese musicians and dancers would to bring the people of Japan and Indonesia closer and also help to promote peace.
The cooperation between ISI and Kanda University is expected to advance and benefit both universities in their arts and cultural studies programs. It is hoped that future projects can involve more joint performances.
