Terror defendant Abu Bakar Bashir says he doubts that the man arrested in Pakistan is Umar Patek because with a $1 million reward for his capture, it is near impossible for the fugitive terrorist to move around.

“I don’t understand what’s going on, but this is strange," Bashir said before attending his trial at the South Jakarta District Court on Thursday, as quoted by news portal Detik.com.

"How could he be in Pakistan all of a sudden? I heard that he was in the Philippines once, how could he relocate so easily? And how could he be accused of having been involved in the [2002] Bali bombings?”

Patek is believed to have served as Jemaah Islamiyah’s deputy field commander in the nightclub bombings that left 202 people dead, including 88 Australians and seven Americans.

Bashir said he did not know Umar Patek.

“I’ve never seen his photo, I don’t know if the man arrested in Pakistan is Umar Patek,” Bashir said.

Bashir on Thursday again refused to attend his hearing, walking out of the courtroom after receiving permission from presiding judge Herri Swantoro.

He followed the hearing with his lawyers from the court’s detention facility.

Bashir is the founder of Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid, a fundamentalist group that aspires to establish an Islamic state in Indonesia. He is being tried for allegedly raising funds for a paramilitary training camp in Aceh that was led by key militants including the late Dulmatin and Abu Tholut.

His trial continues.
