Bashir Lawyer Declines Comment on Attacks

The lawyer for Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged spiritual leader of the Jamaah Islamiyah terrorist group, said he had nothing to say about Friday morning's twin bombings at Jakarta hotels.

"I am not able to give comments regarding the bombings on behalf of Abu Bakar Bashir as it is not my domain," said Hasyim Abdullah, adding that Bashir is currently in Solo.

"We met yesterday [Thursday] and he was fine and we were not talking about security issues in the country," he said.

Jemaah Islamiyah has been blamed for a string of bombings on local and Western targets in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia in recent years, including attacks that killed 12 people at the Jakarta Marriott in 2003 and more than 200 people in Bali in 2002.

Bashir has long denied that the group exists.

The bombings Friday at the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels claimed nine lives and left 53 injured.
