The Los Angeles Galaxy and football megastar David Beckham arrived in Jakarta on Monday morning, with hundreds of fans greeting them at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Though not many Indonesians follow Major League Soccer, the fact that former England captain Beckham is on the team has drawn considerable attention.

As part of the Galaxy’s Asia-Pacific tour, coach Bruce Arena’s side will play against the Indonesian national team on Wednesday at Gelora Bung Karno before facing the Philippines national squad in Manila on Saturday.

The tour concludes in Australia with a match against Melbourne Victory on Dec. 6.

“We’re very happy to be here,” said a bleary-eyed Beckham less than 10 hours after the team arrived in Jakarta.

The 36-year-old, who is in the last month of a five-year contract with the Galaxy, said this was not his first time in Indonesia.

“I was here before on holiday, but I’ve never played here before,” he said. “I hear Indonesia has many talented young players, so it’ll be a very exciting game for me and my teammates.”

Joining Beckham are 26 other players, including US national team star Landon Donovan and Irish striker Robbie Keane.

“On behalf of the team, I would like to say that we’re excited to be here and looking forward to the game. It’s great experience for the club to play in a new environment as some players don’t have experience of such exposure,” Arena said.

Besides Wednesday’s match, the Galaxy will have a meet and greet with fans and a coaching clinic with youths today.

Despite the hype, promoter Mahaka Sports is struggling to sell tickets. President director Hasani Abdulgani said that of the 76,000 available, only 15,000 tickets had been sold as of Monday evening.

The Galaxy is the second foreign club to visit Jakarta in recent months. AC Milan Glorie, a group of famous players from the Italian side, came in September.
