jaja, nono! you are completely wrong; Indonesia will not implement sharia, simply because it will FALL APART before that happens. About 50mio Indonesians are NOT muslim and they will create their own countries. And that is a LOT of people who will fight for their personal/religious freedom. Just wait and see. And we will watch and see how YOUR sharia overcrowded island state will do...

Unfortunately in Indonesia religion is not a private matter. It is printed on everyone's identity card and you are required to state your religion on your CV. this makes it easy for government and employers to discriminate against minorities.. It is in fact legal discrimination.

Even in multi faith schools where the majority are Muslim, they force other students to hide when they are eating. This is not what Ramadan is about. Fasting is a personal sacrifice made between the individual and Allah. Non Muslims should not be forced to fast or hide while eating. Unfortunately most Muslims do not see it that way. So what is the point in fasting if Allah knows that you are hurting others around you? This kind of behaviour makes Islam look like a forceful ideology rather than a spiritual religion that seeks peace and harmony.

@tempodulu, so sad that things have changed so much in the 8 years since i have lived there. Remember when religion was a personal choice and nobodies business but there own!

@icwhyte Sharia law is already in force in Aceh and many sharia bylaws are also passed in other parts of the country. Indonesia is a moderate country and already people are being arrested for not obeying the rules of god. The prognosis does not look encouraging to say the least.

This makes islam look bad in the eyes of the world and those responsible should be reprimanded for bringing islam into disrepute.

Fasting is a choice and not compulsory.

According to the Quran.

Bengkulu. Police in Bengkulu city in Sumatra have arrested four civil servants, including one non-Muslim, for not fasting.

According to Bengkulu Police head Khairul Saleh, the four people were found eating in a restaurant during a sweep by authorities on Thursday.

“For the time being they were given a written reprimand. It would be up their offices concerned to follow it up,” Khairul said.

The sweep was carried out on the orders of Bengkulu Mayor Ahmad Kanedi, who said on the first day of Ramadan that city employees who did not fast during the holy month would be dismissed from their jobs.

He also offered a Rp 1 million ($118) bounty to citizens to help catch administration officials eating in public.

The four civil servants arrested on Thursday were likely not employees of the city, Khairul said, and one, identified as R.T., was a non-Muslim employee of the local Trade Ministry office.

He said the four would be referred to their office supervisors.

“They have all been released and we will send the written reprimands to their superiors for a follow-up according to the existing policy. If they are city employees they will certainly be given a sanction by the mayor,” he said.

He added that police would continue their sweeps throughout the holy month to discourage civil servants from eating during the day.

Civil servants were supposed to serve as an example during Ramadan, he said, even if they were not Muslim.
