Extensive surface flooding played havoc with traffic and pedestrians in Jakarta on Thursday morning after heavy rainfalls.
Hamid, a forcaster at the Climatology, Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BKMG), said the capital was likely to experience light to heavy rainfalls for the remainder of the day, causing similar problems for commuters this evening.
The rainy conditions would persist until the end of the month, he said.
Hamid said heavy rain fell throughout Jakarta as well as the neighboring cities of Tangerang and Depok on Thursday and would continue for the remainder of the day, increasing the likelihood of flooding.
The BKMG had been advised of flooding in South Jakarta, Depok and Bogor.
Jakarta Traffic Police, on there Web site and on Twitter, warned drivers to take care due to slippery roads and the possibility of falling trees, branches or billboards.
Surface flooding affected many parts of the city, including the major thoroughfares of Jalan Rasuna Said, Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Casablanca and Jalan Thamrin.
Police calls for motorcyclists to avoid sheltering under traffic flyovers to limit traffic congestion were ignored by many.
Traffic was particularly bad throughout the city, including the Karang Tengah to Tomang toll road, with traffic stretching back 10 kilometers.
