Cimahi, West Java. Three
men from West Java on Sunday set out on a 17,000-kilometer journey by
bicycle from their hometown in Cimahi to make a pilgrimage to Mecca,
Saudi Arabia.
Deni Bayu Saefundin, Ade Supriadi and Yuyus Sunandar are three
friends whose love for cycling spurred their decision to take the road
less traveled to Mecca, SCTV reported.
Deni said they would travel through 14 countries, including
Singapore, Bangladesh, Syria and Jordan. According to their
calculations, the group should reach Saudi Arabia in about nine months.
They have raised Rp 300 million ($35,000) to fund their trip and have
been given special recommendations by the Foreign Ministry to ease the
processing of entry permits and visas for the 14 countries.
Making the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the five pillars of
Islam. All able-bodied Muslims are obliged to perform the hajj at least
once in their lifetime if they can afford to do so.
