438663We must celebrate every milestone in the war against terror. However, OBL's death is a minor victory at best, and several years too late. Al Qaeda is still a dominant entity to be reckoned with, but so do other organizations. These terrorists have spawned and grown into sophisticated cell structures, much harder to detect, even harder to combat. These cells can survive even when their handlers and command hierarchy are eliminated.
DIB, you may not be wrong there. Elections are just around the corner in 2014, but something has been brewing for a while, let's just hope for the best whatever transpires.
We agree Peter - lets celebrate
Nothing can bring peace in Malaysia while the corrupt Govt is pushing the islam banner to the front to protect their position.
The biggest threat is some govts & military intercontectivity with extremists - see it all the time in Pakistan/Iraq etc with the above using sectarian violence to maintain mass imbalance and gain power (money or ideological) The same seems to be panning out here - My $ is on some form of coup within 12 months here - maybe peaceful - maybe not
Islamism may be going strong and making inroads in non-Arab countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan, however Bin Laden's death is almost a sideshow compared with the real story of the year, namely the Arab uprisings that have created a domino effect of toppled autocrats. Conspicuous by its absence in these uprisings has been large sections of these youthful Arab populations demanding that their countries morph into Iranian style theocracies. Obviously it'll take time to see how this pans out but so far it doesn't make for encouraging reading for Al Qaida.
Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia said on Monday that the death of Osama bin Laden could take the world towards "greater peace and universal harmony."
Home minister Hishammuddin Hussein told state media the killing of the Al Qaeda mastermind was an opportunity.
"I hope it will lead to greater safety, peace and universal harmony, which is our global shared responsibility," he told state media.
He said it was very important for everyone to understand the reasons behind the birth of militant movements, some of which still operate in the region.
Malaysian police said they have tightened security at various locations throughout the country following news of bin Laden's death.
"Police have raised the level of security in important and sensitive areas in the country," senior official Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf told news agency Bernama.
Malaysia and Saudi Arabia last month signed a security and intelligence sharing agreement geared towards stopping terrorism.
Last year, Malaysia uncovered an attempt by Islamic extremists led by a Syrian scholar with suspected ties to Al Qaeda who were planning to blow up houses of worship.
The suspects, mainly students who have all been deported, were also trying to revive the Southeast Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) by attracting new members from Malaysian universities.
Prime Minister Najib Razak has said his government would tighten security to prevent a resurgence of JI, which is blamed for a string of major attacks in the region including the 2002 Bali bombings in neighboring Indonesia.
