Jakarta. The Bojonegoro District Court in East Java has sentenced a teacher to five years in jail after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting his 16-year-old maid inside a toilet stall of the religious school where he worked, the Attorney General’s Office announced on Friday.

Zaenuri, a teacher of Ngasem elementary school, was also fined Rp 60 million ($6,700) for the crime, according to a report published on the AGO’s official Web site.

Zaenuri sexually assaulted the girl after she came to him and said she was in dire need of money, the report said.

The crime was discovered by local residents who immediately brought Zaenuri to the police.

The defendant accepted his sentence.

The court ruling was delivered on Wednesday, and comes just two weeks after Indonesian prosecutors demanded a wealthy Muslim cleric who took a 12-year-old girl as his unofficial wife be convicted of sexually abusing a child and given six years in prison.

Pujiono Cahyo Widiyanto, 45, from Semarang, sparked nationwide controversy over marrying a poor village girl named Lutfiana Ulfa in August 2008.

“We recommend six years prison for him. He has been proven legally as being sexually abusive toward women, especially toward this underage person,” prosecutor Suningsih said on Oct. 21.

“As the owner of a religious school [Pujiono] doesn’t set a good example” she said.

Pujiono, also known as Sheikh Puji, had defended the unofficial marriage, his second, saying that the girl had reached puberty, making the union permissible.

He had said his actions were acceptable under Islam but critics pointed out that state law held 16 as the minimum age to consent to marriage.

Indonesian law has harsh penalties for pedophilia, but unregistered marriages between older men and underage girls are common in rural areas.
