Musi Rawas, South Sumatra. Police arrested a 13-year-old student on Saturday on charges that he shot a classmate with a homemade gun during a fight.

Anggar Nopan is accused of shooting Ranggut Inggrit, also 13, in the left thigh while the two argued inside a classroom at public junior high school SMPN 1 in Bangun Rejo during school hours.

According to reports, Ranggut had showed a homemade gun to Anggar, who asked to hold the weapon. Ranggut refused, and during a tussle a shot was fired that struck Ranggut in the leg.

Students and a teacher reported hearing a shot and then seeing Ranggut crying in pain. He was then taken to the hospital and the injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

The school’s vice principal confirmed the details of the incident, saying he was just outside the classroom when he heard the shot. He rushed inside and saw the victim crying in pain.

The victim’s mother, Sukaisih, said she was informed of the shooting by the school and rushed to the hospital in nearby Lubuklinggau.

Adjutant Comr. Parulian Pardede, chief of intelligence at the Musi Rawas district police, said officers were continuing to question Anggar.

He said Anggar claimed that he was the one who brought the gun to school, and that he had borrowed the weapon from a friend, an elementary school student in Bangung Rejo.

Police are still trying to track down the original owner of the weapon.
