South Africa’s foreign ministry on Wednesday confirmed that a plane went missing while traveling from Johannesburg to the Libyan capital Tripoli.
“All we know is that a plane went missing en route from Johannesburg to Trippoli. At this stage we cannot confirm whether the plane crashed,” foreign ministry spokesman Nomfanelo Kota.
“We are talking to civil authorites from South Africa and Tripoli,” she added.
A security official in Tripoli told AFP that an Afriqiyah Airways plane crashed as it was landing after a flight from Johannesburg at around 6:00 a.m., killing all 105 people on board.
Libya’s Afriqiyah Airways said one of its Airbus-330s had “an accident during landing” at Tripoli airport on Wednesday but had no information on casualties or survivors among the 93 passengers and 11 crew on board.
“Afriqiyah Airways announce that our flight 8U771 had an accident during landing at Tripoli International airport,” the airline said on its Web site.
“At this moment we have no information concerning possible casualties or survivors. Our information is that there were 93 passengers and 11 crew aboard. The competent authorities are conducting the search and rescue mission,” it added.
