1,000 prisoners crammed into a space designed for 300 prisoners. What do they expect? That everyone is going to get along pleasantly with each other?

It would be too much to expect officials to make the connection that overcrowding and all the results of that might influence the way people interact. That would require too much common sense.

Denpasar. Indonesian security forces stormed Bali’s Kerbokan prison around dawn Wednesday to end a riot at the jail, where several Australian inmates are housed, a police official said.

“Police and military forces entered the prison at about dawn. They were forced to open fire and three people were injured in the legs and taken to hospital,” Bali deputy police chief Ketut Untung Sayoga said.

“We are still trying to calm the situation down,” he said.

Several Australians are housed in Kerobokan, including two on death row and six serving life sentences.
