Jakarta Police said a suspected drug dealer they arrested for firing a gun at a TransJakarta bus in a road-rage incident would be slapped with at least four separate charges and face up to 16 years in prison.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Nico, who also uses the name Siang Fuk, was arrested at his home in North Jakarta last month, hours after discharging the firearm.
During their investigation, police found two men trapped in the basement, more than 16,000 psychotropic pills, including ecstasy, and about a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine.
Adj. Sr. Comr. Irwan Anwar, the North Jakarta Police chief of detectives, said at the time of the arrest that police also seized two firearms, samurai swords, an axe and bullets.
The two men were identified as Sunaryo and Iwan, drug dealers working for Nico. The men, who were tied up and gagged, had suffered cigarette burns and cuts after reportedly failing to hand over Rp 50 million ($5,600) in drug money to Nico on time.
Irwan said on Monday that the charge carrying the highest jail term related to violation of the 1951 Law on Firearms, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.
“In accordance with the law, we will add an additional one-third on top of those 12 years, bringing the total to 16 years,” Irwan said.
He said Nico would also be investigated for violations of articles of the Criminal Code relating to damage of property, gambling and unpleasant conduct.
“Then, of course, there is the matter of the drugs,” he said. “He is going to be charged separately for the drug offenses under the Anti-Narcotics Law, which means his sentencing demand could be far harsher than he might initially expect.
“He is being categorized as a distributor of drugs, not just a user.”
Irwan said police would continue to detain Nico and that he would not be released on bail. The case will be transferred to prosecutors soon, he said.
The initial incident occurred on a Saturday evening in January, when Nico was driving his car in a busway lane on Jalan Pluit Permai in North Jakarta. As a bus stopped in front of his car to let passengers get off, Nico apparently became impatient and allegedly fired five shots at the bus.
He was traced to his home after the bus driver wrote down the car’s license plates.
