Jakarta. A visitor to Jakarta has found out the hard way that the number of thefts where robbers drug their intended victims is rising ahead of Idul Fitri.

Alimin, 37, from Cilacap, Central Java, stopped to say prayers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Wednesday after flying in from Pekanbaru, Riau.

He met three men who chatted him up and offered him a herbal drink. He then fainted.

An unconscious Alimin was found by police along Jalan MT Haryono in Tebet, South Jakarta, who took him to a nearby health clinic.

Alimin reported he had lost Rp 2 million ($222), money he was going to give to his family.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar warned travelers that such incidents were on the rise as perpetrators needing cash for the holidays were on the prowl.

“Try not to look confused when you’re out on the road or at a station, airport or port,” he said, identifying the usual places where such thieves operate.

“Also, don’t get too close to people whom you’ve just met. Don’t trust strangers too easily, and just refuse if someone offers you a drink.”

Boy said the drugs were usually added to canned coffee beverages. “Also be careful when buying such beverages from vendors,” he added.

Boy said the perpetrators made a small hole in the top of the can and added the drugs. The hole is then covered by aluminum foil, which is not noticed by unsuspecting victims.
