Conjoined twins who were born earlier this month joined at the chest have died from heart failure in Pekanbaru, Riau, doctors said on Monday.
Dr. Tubagus Ondih, the head of surgeons at Arifin Achmad General Hospital, said the condition of the baby girls, who shared a heart, had steadily deteriorated since Saturday night and that the girls died late on Sunday.
The babies were born in Indragiri Hulu district on Jan. 14 and had been hospitalized in Pekanbaru since Jan. 15. Doctors had previously said they could not successfully separate them because they shared a single heart.
