A terrorist convicted of building the bombs that killed 202 people on the resort island of Bali in 2002 has asked Indonesian’s president to reduce his life sentence, an official said Tuesday.
Sarjiyo, who is known by a single name or by the alias of Zaenal Abidin, recently sent a letter to the Denpasar District Court requesting that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono set a fixed sentence for him to serve, court official Posma Nainggolan said.
The same court sentenced him in 2004 for helping assemble the bombs and planning the attacks on two nightclubs on Oct. 12, 2002. Among the dead were 152 foreigners.
The attacks were allegedly funded by al-Qaida and carried out by the Southeast Asian terror network Jemaah Islamiyah.
Sarjiyo, a 39-year-old Muslim convert, could have been sentenced to death. Three accomplices were executed by firing squad in 2008.
Nainggolan, the court official, said Sarjiyo’s letter and file will be sent to the Indonesian Supreme Court, which will forward the letter to the president.
The clemency process can take years and most requests are rejected.
