Firebrand cleric and convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Bashir has been granted permission to leave prison temporarily in order to receive medical treatment for his failing eyesight.
Hasyim Abdullah, the 73-year-old’s assistant, said on Saturday that the Supreme Court approved the request last Wednesday, several months after lawyers for the cleric applied for the medical leave last May.
“Now we just have to arrange things with the Attorney General’s Office and Densus 88 [the police’s counterterrorism squad], but that should just be a formality,” he said.
Bashir is currently in police custody pending an appeal to the Supreme Court against a nine-year sentence handed down by the Jakarta High Court last year for his role in funding a terrorist training camp in Aceh.
He had initially been sentenced to 15 years by a district court. In his latest appeal, he is asking for all charges against him to be overturned.
