Two men were convicted on Tuesday of aiding slain terrorist mastermind Noordin M Top before and after last July’s Jakarta hotel bombings.
Supono, 35, was sentenced to six years in prison and Rohmat Puji Prabowo, 34, received seven and a half years in separate trials at the South Jakarta District Court.
Both were found to have traveled with Noordin prior to the bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Kuningan, South Jakarta, and to have harbored him afterward.
The attacks killed seven people plus the two suicide bombers.
“We find the defendant guilty of providing assistance to and harboring a known terrorist,” presiding judge Kusno said in Supono’s trial. “Accordingly, we sentence the defendant to six years in jail.”
The sentence was lighter than the nine years sought by prosecutors and the 15-year maximum sentence for the charge.
Kuson said mitigating factors included the defendant’s admission of guilt, his show of remorse and his lack of prior convictions.
Supono’s defense counsel, Asludin Hatjani, said his client would not appeal the verdict.
In one court hearing, the defendant claimed to have delivered a van that was to be used as part of a plot to target the president’s motorcade with a car bomb. Supono said he had driven the van from Central Java to the terrorist group’s hideout in Bekasi.
However, the trial did not pick up on this point.
In a separate trial, Rohmat, who was previously convicted and served time for the deadly Australian Embassy truck bombing, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for a similar charge of harboring a fugitive.
The sentence was again lighter than the 10 years that had been sought by prosecutors.
Asludin, also representing Rohmat, said the defendant accepted the verdict and would not appeal.
Rohmat was released from prison in 2006 for his role in the 2004 embassy attack in Jakarta that killed nine people, including the suicide bomber.
Prior to last year’s hotel bombings, he escorted Noordin carrying a cache of explosives part of the way from Central Java to Jakarta. The two were believed to have departed in two vans on June 29, stopping at Cikampek, West Java, to switch cars and for Rohmat to head back to Central Java.
On Aug. 7, three weeks after the bombings and in the midst of one of the most intensive manhunts in the country’s history, Rohmat met up with Noordin at a safe house in Solo.
Rohmat, believed to be part of a Central Java cell preaching martyrdom, was arrested on Sept. 16. His questioning subsequently led police to Noordin’s safe house, where the terrorist mastermind was killed in a shootout.
