A gaffe-prone Indonesian minister has backed the idea of state-run cannabis farms in a country that imposes the death penalty for people caught trafficking the drug.

State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan, whose slogan is “manufacturing hope”, said he warmed to the idea after a pharmacist told him about cannabis’s medicinal effects.

“This idea was proposed by a pharmacist, who said marijuana seeds can be used as medicine for heart disease and cancer,” Iskan was quoted as saying by state-run news agency Antara earlier this week.

“Why doesn’t the ministry consider managing marijuana plantations as an alternative to other medicines, instead of always burning it?” he said. Soldiers and police regularly torch cannabis fields as part of eradication efforts.

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Trafficking more than one kilogramme (2.2 pounds) of marijuana carries a maximum sentence of death by firing squad.

Iskan, a media tycoon and potential presidential candidate, is known as an attention seeker who regularly gets himself caught up in embarrassing situations.

In January, the minister charged with modernising the country’s state sector crashed a $300,000 prototype electric sports car, held up as being in the vanguard of Indonesia’s auto sector, into a cliff.

In one of his best-known publicity stunts, he jumped out of Jakarta’s notorious gridlock to personally lift a toll gate and usher cars through.

Looks like the whole site has gone to pot?

  • Jorith

The minister might risk a death sentence when we extrapolate the law on
    drugs users and dealers.

  • Louis Cypher

@antifreeze – yep – strange log in too. Lost my user name and login credentials. Posting sadly here last time as “Roland”

  • antifreeze

@ Roland. think you can call yourself what you want just back it up with an email address which doesn’t need to be the same name. Just waiting to see 22 roles back again!

    • Hooswho

He is back – snuck in under the radar during the upgrade and started posting his uninformed venom. How long before Rajiv et al start spewing hate again?

  • 22roles

This guy I believe was DUI when he wrecked the car…who knows he might have gotten the support from Carr, crap

    • ruldolphtherednosedeindeer

Moderator may I draw you attention to point 5a

In addition, comments that are known to be false, misleading or libelous will not be allowed.

If 22roles post is not libelous, false and misleading then what is?

he suggests the minister was DUI – false and libelous
Mentions Carr – when the vehicle was def MII and was of his own making

New look – same old mod

      • 22roles

You could believe in whatever you wanted to believe and I have every right to believe in what I think what i happened…whether you agreed with me or not, it’s your crap mate..

        • rudolftherednosedreindeer

On the contrary, it is up to you to sick to the comments policy and express your views within the limits – you lied (Carr) and your comment was libelous (by Dahlan)
As it happens I think Dahlan should have been charged with dangerous driving, driving a non registered car and imprisoned
However, he is a part of the Indonesian elite and as such is beyond the reach of the law
Can I ask why you mentioned Carr? Simply spurious knee jerk comment or deep seated hatred ?

        • DrDez

But you don’t have every right to be abusive and to spew lies. Which is what you do frequently. I have read 3 posts already from you in the new format that are offensive or plain lies… what a sad and deranged life you must lead

      • 22roles

Police left a big gap without putting this dahlan guy for blood test or drugs when he crashed that car…you on the other hand is bunch of people cry baby when I came up from different angle.

      • 22roles

Police failed big time not putting this guy under the test for drugs and marijuana ..you just cried baby when I came up from another angle..I have every right to see the angle where Carr was supporting to legalised certain drugs and now this guy is doing exactly the same.

If I see his smile in the picture he maybe has just tested the stuff…

  • Vanu

JG, hate the new format, maybe time to revisit the Post.

    • Good,Bad and Ugly

It is too difficult to read; you don’t need 3X2 cm pictures; Don’t need 24-28 point font for article heads; Look at BBC or CNN for a pattern that works. Not enough stories per page.
A couple of weeks ago I put JG ahead of JP on my picks, but I will put JG down again.

      • devine

Just give all this input to WebEd… since it is now beta I am sure the will improve… (too big fonts etc.). But then, as somebody else said; WHY THE NEW LAYOUT anyway… the old one was perfect (except for the missing up/down thumbs)… so WHY change??? WebEd…WHY? I dont think that there is any added value for you here…

terrible idea fro JG to publish articles from french media when the topic is on our own minister whom we definitely know better than them, for example the name Dahlan Iskan is definitely not synonymous with being gaffe-prone, in fact as far as i know he is more well-known for his resistance to corruption and pressures from political elites who hates him for it. as for the marijuana comment, well perhaps it is an attempt from french media to divert attention from their own gaffes-fiesta and say that “hey others are like us too” LOL

The positive is that finally some good quality smoke will come out of Aceh.
But we know the real reason for Istan’s idea. He wants the profits to be garnered by the state and those who personally will have a stake, read corruption.

  • Forgetyourself

It can be good business to grow cannabis – has lots of good uses. Just hope they don’t start slashing forests for the plantations .

    • devine

No need to slash forest… just take over the thousands and thousands of acres of weed that are currently in production mode…

    • GypsyMacaque

yep we also can export cannabis & earn some hard currency. And no deforestation needed, agreed! But is this halal?

  • Forgetyourself

Agree – it looks terrible on my phone. But I don’t think ill go back to the Post.

  • Roland

Personally I preferred the old layout also much more. I’m still trying to get used to the new one but yet to no avail. As ‘forgetyourself’ mentions -it doesn’t look all to great on a tablet.

The only nice feature is this “up and down” rating thingy …and maybe the community part!

    • Valkyrie1604

Roland…..I too like the “up and down” thingy.

  • MadWorld

    Look who’s talking.
Forget his electrifying cars, I think using marijuana based on medical purposes( e.g. terminally ill, to alleviate pain syndrom) is not a bad idea. This medical method is legal in certain part of the USA, in Holland or probably surely in Jamaica .

  • Valkyrie1604

Ha! Ha!…keeping up with the Joneses? Anyway, much as I dislike it, I still feel JG is better than the other one. One cannot have things one’s way all the time?
