Death Toll At Least 16 in North Maluku Boat Accident
Rescue teams on Wednesday continued to search for survivors after a
boat carrying dozens of passengers sank in rough seas in South
Halmahera subdistrict, North Maluku, a transportation official said.
“The
updated data we have received so far said 16 passengers are dead and
three are missing,” Bambang Ervan, chief spokesman at the Ministry of
Transportation, told the Jakarta Globe.
Bambang said 32 survivors were being treated at a hospital in Maba, the capital of East Halmahera district.
The
Bobara 01, reported to be carrying 85 passengers on a pleasure trip,
sank off the coast of Bacan Island on Tuesday afternoon.
Military
and government officials said the boat was believed to have been
carrying too many people, a common occurrence in Indonesia, and that it
had capsized in rough waters.
