One of 13 Indonesian fishermen languishing in a Malaysian jail for more than three months has died, a report said on Monday.
The death of the man, identified as Ahmad Zailani from Pantai Labu, North Sumatra, has sparked calls for a demonstration outside the Malaysian Consulate General in Medan after Malaysian authorities demanded the family pay Rp 10 million ($1,117) to repatriate the body.
SCTV reported that Ahmad and twelve other fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing in the Malacca Strait near the Indonesian island of Berhala in August.
The man’s poor family, who live in a fishing village, were unable to pay for the body to be returned home.
Fishermen were planning to protest outside the consulate general today, demanding the body be returned home as quickly as possible.
The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur told the Jakarta Globe that they knew nothing about the death.
Calls to the consulate general in Penang went unanswered.
