Donations of coins to help Prita Mulyasari pay her damages in the defamation case brought against her by Omni Hospital have reached more than Rp 2 million ($200).
Ade Novita, the initiator of the Help Prita movement, said Monday’s donations alone had reached Rp 700,000. According to Ade, some people even made their donations in foreign currencies.
“There’s a foreign citizen who gave us coins in yen. We will exchange it into rupiah,” Ade told Metro TV. There was even a three-year-old boy who gave his life savings to Prita.
“A three-year old boy came and handed me his small piggy bank. It was very moving,” Ade said. She was optimistic that they could raise enough to pay for the Rp 204 million in damages. Businessman Fahmi Idris has offered to cover half of Prita’s bill.
“Prita can pick up the money at my office anytime. I had followed the case since the start and I saw how injustice had been served in her case,” Fahmi said last week.
Prita was moved by the support, according to her lawyer Slamet Yuwono. Slamet said Prita was deeply grateful.
“Ibu Prita said only God can repay the kindness people have given her,” Slamet said.
