The House of Representatives Ethics Council questioned Democratic Party lawmaker Muhammad Nasir on Wednesday over alleged integrity issues in visiting his brother, high-profile graft suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin, at Cipinang Prison.
After grilling Nasir for one and a half hours, the council said it would soon deliver its verdict on the lawmaker.
“We have finished the verification process. Now, we are discussing what kind of decision we will make within a week,” said Muhammad Prakosa, the head of the body.
Nasir is accused of abusing his authority as a member of House Commission III, which oversees legal matters, by making after-hours visits to the prison where Nazaruddin is being held.
Nazaruddin, a former treasurer of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party, is the main suspect in a graft scandal involving the construction of the Southeast Asian Games athletes’ village last year.
Previously, the council questioned Deputy Justice Minister Denny Indrayana to gather information on Nasir’s jail visits to Nazaruddin. Nasir was caught lying about the visit in which Denny discovered him.
He told the Ethics Council that he only saw his brother for half an hour, while Nazaruddin told the press that he spoke with his brother for almost two hours.
Denny told the council that Nasir had visited the Cipinang Prison several times, and that his name was recorded in the visitor book as a Commission III member.
Nasir also visited another corruption suspect, Mindo Rosalina Manulang, at the Pondok Bambu penitentiary on Dec. 30. Rosalina is a defendant in the same bribery case that Nazaruddin is being tried for.
Denny said that on the night that Nasir visited his brother at Cipinang, he was joined by three lawyers, Djufri Taufik, Arif Rahman and Al Bani, who were formerly Rosalina’s counsel.
Denny said Nasir’s nocturnal visits to Nazaruddin presented three potential ethics violations involving several parties.
The first relates to violations by the Cipinang staff, several of whom have been dismissed for their roles in allowing Nasir’s after-hours visits.
Secondly, the investigation will look into the meeting between Rosalina’s former lawyers and Nazaruddin. Denny said the ethical aspects involved there would require the professional opinions of lawyers’ institutions.
Finally, the probe will look at possible code of ethics violations committed by Nasir in his capacity as a legislator.
A council member, Fahri Hamzah, said the lawmakers had found indications that Nasir had violated the House’s ethics. “During the verification, we found violations,” he said.
However, when walking out the hearing room after the Wednesday’s questioning, Nasir rejected all the allegations, telling reporters that he never lied and there was nothing wrong about visiting his brother.
