Charging the driver and put him behind bars for six years and close the case. Nothing changes as it is the drivers fault.

It's so easy to give the fault to one person. Check the urine of one person is definitive cheaper and easier than checking buses for safety, to check if people have driving licenses, to check if the people ever had to past a driving test, no need to flag down people on the hand-phone while driving, no need to find people driving over red traffic lights, and so on.

But how can you expect the population having any road education if the authorities have no clue about what they are doing. Once again the blind is leading the blinds.

Bogor. Lukman Iskandar, the driver of the Karunia Bhakti passenger bus that plunged into a ravine killing 14 people on Friday, said he had run from the scene because he was afraid he would be beaten up by bystanders.

“I panicked and was afraid. I jumped out ... before the bus reached the bank,” the 43-year-old said on Saturday.

Lukman was arrested while at one of the bus pooling stations in Garut six hours after the incident.

He said the bus was roadworthy but developed problems with its back wheels while passing the Puncak road. “We then made some repair and the bus then operated again,” he said.

The bus, carrying around 30 passengers, passed Jalan Raya Puncak but when it reached the section before Pafesta Cisarua its brakes allegedly failed to function, causing it to run into another bus in front of it.

Lukman said he then turned the wheel but hit a billboard, five motorcycles, two mini-buses, an electricity pole, a shop and the fence of a villa before plunging into a seven-meter deep ravine.

Fourteen people died in the incident while 38 others were wounded with 10 of them listed in critical condition.

“I jumped before the bus plunged,” Lukman said.

Lukman, a Garut resident, said he deplored the way events played out and was being examined and would be held responsible for the accident.

The chief of Bogor’s traffic police, Adj. Comms. Syarif Zainal Abidin, said police were still investigating the incident.

He said the driver would also have his urine tested to see if he consumed alcohol or drugs prior to the accident.

Syarif said the driver would be charged with negligence resulting in death.

“He is facing a maximum penalty of six years. But we would still investigate and develop the case further to see if other elements were involved in it. What is clear is his escape would become an incriminating factor,” he said.
