Indonesian antiterror officials believe Dulmatin, the Bali bombing suspect killed in a terror raid two days ago, slipped into Indonesia more than a year ago and continued his militant activities under a new alias.
Dulmatin disappeared after allegedly helping mastermind the 2002 Bali bombings. Authorities believe he spent several years in the Philippines helping Muslim rebels. “We are not quite sure why he returned,” an unnamed senior Indonesian antiterror official told the news Web site thestar.com.my.
Back in Indonesia, Dulmatin began using the name Muhammad Yahya. He is thought to have joined up with Tandzim Al-Qodat, a JI splinter group then run by Noordin M Top. Noordin was subsequently killed in a terror raid last year in Central Java.
Dulmatin traded livestock in Central Java as a cover for his underground activities, unnamed antiterror sources told the news site. He was friendly and got along well with the local community.
The master bomb-builder allegedly spent his time securing weapons from previous conflict areas such as Ambon, Maluku and Poso, Central Sulawesi. He is also said to have trained group members in military tactics and bomb-making.
Police discovered his true identity after launching antiterror operations in a remote region of Aceh last month. They trailed him on his trips between Aceh and Jakarta, until on Tuesday, they cornered him in the internet cafe in Pamulang in what would turn out to be a final showdown.
