The General Elections Commission is holding a meeting this afternoon in an attempt to find a way to allow commission member Andi Nurpati to resign or to terminate her position.
Andi, a controversial member of the even more controversial commission, also known as the KPU, has been appointed to head the Democratic Party’s executive board to oversee public relations.
Lawmakers have criticized the appointment as an ethical violation, while commentators say the move by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s party ahead of a number of provincial, regional and municipal elections this year, as well as the legislative and presidential elections in 2014, is a politically smart move.
The KPU has in the past been blasted for not only incompetence, but questions have also been raised about its objectiveness. The KPU organizes elections and effectively polices them as well given the limited powers of the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu).
Though the Democratic Party has asked Andi to resign her post, under the law, an official cannot resign from the commission unless he or she is permanently invalid or suffering from health problems, none of which apply to Andi.
KPU member I Gusti Putu Artha said Andi’s resignation would be the best way for her to prevent any conflict of interest.
“It will be very wise of Andi if she does not go to the [KPU] office and refrains from taking part in the decision-making process or handling preparations for the regional elections,” Putu said.
