Despite refusing to confirm whether graft suspect Nunun Nurbaeti was in Thailand, the Indonesian ambassador to the country said on Friday that the Corruption Eradication Commission had submitted documents to request her extradition.

“The request for extradition must be submitted through diplomatic channels, therefore it should be submitted by the embassy,” Mohammad Hatta, the Indonesian ambassador to Thailand, said by telephone.

The process can start, he said, once the extradition court in Thailand has produced an arrest warrant for the fugitive, which can take about a month.

He said the embassy had no confirmed information on Nunun’s whereabouts, and could not comment on whether or not she was in the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene declined to comment on the issue on Friday, saying only that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was handling the case.

Nunun, the wife of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) lawmaker Adang Daradjatun, has been identified in court as being involved in the distribution of Rp 24 billion ($2.8 million) in traveler’s checks to secure lawmakers’ votes for economist Miranda Goeltom’s appointment as Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.

The KPK recently named Nunun a suspect in the case, and her passport was revoked on May 26. A team from the KPK was sent to Thailand earlier this week to deliver a warrant request to Thai investigators and the Indonesian Embassy, and to inform them that Nunun’s passport had been canceled.

KPK spokesman Johan Budi said the team returned to Jakarta on Thursday but that he had not yet received an update regarding the trip.

“But the team did meet with Indonesian Embassy officials and Thai prosecutors in Bangkok,” he said. Johan also declined to comment on Nunun’s location

A total of 26 former and current lawmakers from various parties have been arrested and charged by the KPK in the BI bribery scandal, but two of them have passed away.

Another four lawmakers have been convicted.
