The firebomb attack at a BRI ATM in Yogyakarta on Friday took place on the same day the city was celebrating its 252nd anniversary.

The head of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (Asita) for Yogyakarta, Edwin Ismedi Himna, condemned the attack which coincided with Yogyakarta’s big day.

“Such attacks are malicious and irresponsible, especially because it happened on Yogyakarta’s anniversary,” Edwin told the Jakarta Globe.

The city’s anniversary celebrations kicked off on Oct. 1 with cultural carnivals and festivals and will run until the end of the month.

“In less than two weeks, the people of Yogyakarta will also celebrate the royal wedding of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X’s daughter. Thousands of people are expected to come and witness the event because the bride-to-be is the youngest child,” Edwin said.

On Oct. 18, Nurastuti Wijareni, Sultan Hamengkubuwono X’s youngest daughter, is going to marry Achmad Ubaidillah. The wedding has been highly anticipated because the public will be able to witness a grandiose Javanese royal wedding with the bride and groom being paraded around town in a horse-drawn carriage.

The attack happened only two weeks after a suicide bomber blew himself in a church in Solo, Central Java, 60 kilometers away from Yogyakarta.

“We are still shocked by the attack in Solo, now this. We hope the incident will not stop tourists from visiting Yogyakarta,” Edwin said.
