The body of a Indonesian fisherman who died languishing in a Malaysian jail has been returned home.

Rusmawati, 28, openly wept as she met the casket containing her husband, Eli Zailani (previously reported as Ahmad Jailani), at Polonia Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, on Monday.

Malaysian authorities arrested Zailani, a resident of Pantai Labu, Deli Serdang, and 12 other fishermen in the Malacca Strait near the Indonesian island of Berhala in August.

Medan-based newspaper the Sumut Post reported that since Zailani’s arrest, Rusmawati and their five children had been relying on the kindness of neighbors and relatives to survive.

She gave birth to her fifth child when Zailani was in jail.

There was no information on the fate of the surviving fishermen or how Zailani died.

Contacted by the Jakarta Globe, the vice consul of the Malaysian Consulate General in Medan would not comment.

A former migrant worker has claimed that Indonesians in Malaysian prisons are frequently given poor treatment, which the embassy in Kuala Lumpur denies.
